So, you're probably wondering who I am, because I'm clearly not Jess. I'm her assistant & stylist, Meredith Withey. Yes, we have the same last name. I married Jess's older brother, Ash, last July, making me THE MOST BLESSED girl in the world. I got a super hot husband & a super cool sister-in-law all in one day. Now that I work with Jess, you'll be seeing me from time to time. I'm an all American girl with a weakness for coffee, a passion for seeing people become all they're meant to be, & a love for living the most joy-filled life. So, let the adventure begin!
How often do you go shopping and see the most beautiful leather boots, or the wool coat that fits you just right, or that vintage handbag that has somehow survived the decades and only gotten better with age?
This happens to me literally all the time.
These things are examples of what I would call ‘investment pieces’, and I’m a sucker for them. Why are they my weakness? It isn’t simply because I like the item, or they’re the trendiest things on the shop shelf. It’s because they LAST! They’re not a cheap item that will either be out of style by next season or fall apart the first time you wash it. I’m a big fan of high quality, because I know I’m going to get my money’s worth. I don’t mind spending a bit more on something that will last years both in quality and style. In fact, I would rather my closet be half full of investment pieces than bursting at the seams with pieces I bought to follow a fad.
Thanks to fast fashion retailers like Asos, Zara, H&M, etc. you don’t have to spend an entire month’s rent on an investment piece. In fact, I recently bought this denim jacket from Zara for only £30! That’s a bargain, people! So, if you’re a twenty-something like me who’s still trying to find yourself, & therefore not making much money, fear not. Fast fashion was created for people like us! However, if there is that piece that’s just slightly more than you would normally spend, I’m a firm believer in saving your money in order to treat yourself. Everybody needs a treat from time to time!
Below are some pieces that I believe are ALWAYS worth investing in :
Cheap denim is never fun. It stretches, loses its shape, fades...it’s just bad. So, whether it’s a pair of jeans, a jacket, a shirt, do yourself a favour and invest!
Some shoe lovers will tell you to invest in a good pair of heels. Others will say brogues . I wear boots 90% of the year, so that’s what I invest in.
Basics are an area that I don’t mind spending a bit more money in. It’s pointless to pay £5 for a t-shirt that I know I’ll find holes in after a few months. Why not pay an extra pound or two for something that will actually last a couple of years?
So, the next time you're out shopping and you see the latest 70's inspired orange velvet flares (no lie, I saw some the other day), JUST SAY NO!
However, if you see a killer pair of snakeskin chelsea boots (my current obsession) that you know will last you through to next spring do yourself a favour & just go for it!
I'm off to go and take my own advice...
Until next time y'all!
